How to transfer utility bills (electricity and water) into my name?

Hey everyone, I recently moved into a new apartment and need to get the utility bills transferred to my name. I'm a bit confused about where to start and what documents I'll need to provide to the service providers. Do I need the previous owner's consent or just my lease agreement? If anyone has gone through this recently, I'd really appreciate a quick step-by-step breakdown of how to do it without too much hassle.

Congrats on the new place! Usually, you just need your lease agreement and a photo of the current meter readings on the day you moved in.

I agree with the first point, meter readings are super important so you don't end up paying for the previous tenant's usage.

When I did this last year, most utility companies let you do it entirely online through their portal. Saved me a ton of time.

@previous user For water, it depends on the city, but usually your lease is enough proof that you're the responsible party now.

Make sure you call them at least a week in advance. Some providers take forever to process the change.

You definitely don't need the previous tenant's consent. Just their account number helps speed things up if you have it.

That's a great tip about the old account number. I didn't have it and it took ages to find the right meter ID.

Check if your apartment complex has a preferred provider, sometimes they bundle things together.

Just take photos of the meters with a newspaper showing the date. Proof is everything if they try to overcharge you.

In my city, the landlord actually has to submit a form first, then the tenant can take over. Might want to check with yours just in case.

Auto-pay is a lifesaver, just keep an eye on the first bill to make sure the rates look normal.
