How do you pay your utility bills if you are outside Bulgaria for 6 months?

Hey everyone, I am planning to be away from Bulgaria for about half a year for work, but my apartment back in Sofia will still have running electricity, water, and heating services connected. I'm wondering what the easiest and most reliable way is to handle monthly utility payments while abroad. Is online banking through Bulgarian apps the best option, or should I set up direct debit with each provider? Any tips from people who have been in a similar situation would be greatly appreciated.

Direct debit is definitely the way to go if your bank supports it with local utility companies.

I used ePay.bg when I lived abroad for a year, and it worked flawlessly for all my bills in Sofia.

Just make sure your mobile banking app doesn't require a physical token generator for every single payment, otherwise you might get locked out.

Check if your heating provider (Toplofikatsiya) allows online billing directly through their portal, some of them are actually quite modern now.

That is a great point about Toplofikatsiya, but honestly, their website can be super buggy from foreign IP addresses sometimes.

Another option is leaving a small deposit with a trusted friend or family member who can pay them at Bulgarian Posts or EasyPay offices.

To add to what was said about EasyPay, you can also use their online platform, EasyPay.online, from anywhere in the world with a credit card.

Don't forget to update your contact phone number with the utility companies so you receive SMS notifications if something goes wrong.

Honestly, setting up direct debit (virtual POS) through your Bulgarian bank is the most set-and-forget method.

Just keep in mind that water bills (Sofiyska Voda) sometimes fluctuate, so direct debit is much safer than fixed bank orders.
