Varna vs Burgas for moving with family? Where is it easier to find work and schools?

My spouse and I are planning to relocate to the Bulgarian coast with our two kids, aged 7 and 10, but we are torn between Varna and Burgas. We both work in IT and project management, so decent job opportunities are a top priority for us. At the same time, we need a city with good international or public schools, safe neighborhoods, and plenty of family-friendly activities. Which of the two cities offers a better quality of life for a young family, and how do they compare in terms of cost of living and expat community?

Both cities are great for families, but Varna definitely feels a bit bigger and more dynamic.

Since you both work in IT, Varna is probably your best bet because of the larger tech hub presence and more multinational companies.

I completely disagree with the second comment. Burgas has grown massively in the IT sector over the last few years and offers a much cleaner, more compact environment for kids.

Burgas has the Sea Garden, which is honestly the best park for children in Bulgaria. It's so safe and pedestrian-friendly.

Replying to @user5: Varna has the French Lycée and a couple of solid private bilingual schools, while Burgas has a very strong mathematics gymnasium, though fewer purely international options.

Cost of living is pretty comparable in both, though rent has gone up significantly in Varna recently due to the influx of remote workers.

If your kids are 7 and 10, integration into a local public school shouldn't be too hard at that age, but private options give more peace of mind.

I live in Burgas with my family and we absolutely love it. It's much less chaotic than Varna during the summer tourist season.

Varna feels more like a real year-round metropolis, whereas Burgas can feel a bit sleepy in the winter months. Depends on what vibe you prefer.

Look into the neighborhoods too. In Varna, look at Vinitsa or Trakata for houses, and in Burgas, Sarafovo is very popular with expats.

Expat community is quite active in both places, with regular meetups and Facebook groups, so you won't struggle to make friends.

Project management jobs might require some Bulgarian, but in IT you can easily get by with just English in either city.

Just visit both for a week each before deciding. That's what we did and the choice became obvious once we walked around.

Go with Varna for better career networking, go with Burgas for a calmer family lifestyle. You can't really make a wrong choice though!
