Securing a holiday apartment in winter. Do I need SOT (alarm) or bars on windows?

We recently bought a holiday apartment in a quiet coastal town, but it will sit empty for most of the winter months. I am getting a bit paranoid about break-ins since the neighborhood gets very deserted once tourist season ends. A local neighbor suggested installing window bars, but I really dislike how prison-like they make the place look. On the other hand, is a smart security system with motion sensors and door contacts enough when nobody is physically nearby to respond quickly? Would love to hear what other second-home owners do for winter security.

Congrats on the new place! Honestly, window bars are overkill for most coastal towns unless crime rates are exceptionally high there.

I second that. Bars just scream 'we have valuables inside and nobody is home' to potential thieves.

We have a holiday home in a similar deserted winter spot and we went with a monitored alarm system plus smart cameras.

Does the local security company actually respond quickly though? That's always my main worry with SOT.

@User4 Our provider calls us immediately and dispatches a local patrol. It gives us great peace of mind, plus we can check the live camera feeds anytime.

Don't forget about timer switches for your indoor lights! Making it look like someone is home is the best deterrent.

Smart plugs are cheap and super effective for that exact reason. You can randomize the schedule so it looks natural.

If you really hate bars, consider laminated security glass. It's much harder to smash through and looks completely normal from the outside.

That security glass idea is genius, though probably quite expensive. Worth checking the insurance requirements first too.

Just make sure you clear out all valuables, electronics, and food at the end of the season. If there's nothing to steal, they won't linger.

Also, ask a trusted neighbor or local caretaker to pick up your mail and flyers so they don't pile up in winter.

Totally agree with the local contact suggestion. Having someone physically walk around the property once a week is better than any tech.
