Living in Sozopol year-round. Are the medical facilities and schools any good?

My partner and I are seriously considering making the move to Sozopol and living there full-time instead of just visiting during the summer months. However, we have a young child and want to make sure the local infrastructure can support a permanent lifestyle. How are the medical facilities in town for everyday needs and emergencies? Also, are there decent schooling options for kids, or would we need to look into private tutors or commuting further out?

We moved to Sozopol full-time two years ago with our two kids, and honestly, it's been the best decision of our lives.

For medical needs, the local polyclinic is fine for basic stuff like colds and prescriptions, but for anything serious, everyone goes straight to Bourgas.

Bourgas is only about 30 minutes away by car, so emergencies aren't as scary as they sound on paper.

Regarding schools, there is a local school in Sozopol, but most expats I know choose to commute their kids to Bourgas for better educational programs and English classes.

I second what @BourgasCommuter said. The local school is okay for primary grades, but high school options are quite limited.

Winter in Sozopol is extremely quiet. Make sure you are ready for a ghost town vibe compared to the bustling summer months!

Is heating expensive in the winter there? That's my main concern about year-round living.

Electricity bills can get quite high if you rely on AC units, so look for a place with a fireplace or pellet stove.

Grocery shopping is also trickier in the winter because many of the smaller shops close down. You'll rely heavily on the LIDL in Bourgas.

Honestly, if you work remotely, the internet speed is surprisingly good in most parts of the town.

The expat community is small but tight-knit. People organize coffee meetups and dinners, but you definitely need to make an effort.

Medical care is decent for standard GP visits, but finding a good dentist who speaks English took me a few months.

Don't worry too much about the schools, children adapt faster than we do, and the local environment is so much healthier than Sofia or Plovdiv.

Totally agree with the health aspect. Growing up by the sea is a massive perk for kids.

Just make sure your residency paperwork is in order before making the permanent jump. Bureaucracy can be slow.

Yes, there is a municipal kindergarten in town, but getting a spot can sometimes be competitive, so apply early.

We rented a place for one full winter before buying, and I strongly recommend you do the same to test the waters.
