Hey everyone, I'm currently looking at a place right on the coast with a direct sea view, but I'm a bit worried about the maintenance. I've heard that the salty sea breeze can absolutely wreck household appliances like the AC, fridge, and washing machine pretty quickly. For those of you who actually live right on the front line, how fast do things start rusting or breaking down? Are there specific brands or anti-corrosion coatings I should look for when buying new appliances?

Living about 50 meters from the water here. Honestly, it's brutal on electronics. We had to replace our AC condenser unit after just three years because the coils completely rotted out from the salt.

Is your AC unit shaded or exposed directly to the sea wind? I wonder if that makes a huge difference.

It faces the ocean directly, so it gets the full brunt of the breeze. Even with a balcony roof, the salt air just creeps in everywhere.

My fridge and washing machine are actually fine, but anything with an outdoor component like the heat pump or AC is doomed eventually. Just budget for replacements every few years.

Look for appliances with 'Blue Fin' or 'Gold Fin' technology on the heat exchangers. They have a special anti-corrosion coating that helps a lot against coastal humidity and salt.

Mostly AC units and heat pump dryers, but some high-end brands use coated internal boards now too. For the washing machine, the biggest issue is usually the exterior chassis rusting at the bottom if water splashes.

Honestly, people exaggerate a bit. Just wash down your balcony and outdoor units with fresh water once a month to get the salt crust off, and things will last much longer.

I second rinsing things down with fresh water. My dad has lived by the coast for decades and swears by it. If you let the salt sit there and crystallize, it eats through the metal in no time.

Don't forget about your window hinges and sliding door tracks too! Those started sticking and rusting for us long before the kitchen appliances showed any damage.

If the view is truly direct and amazing, the maintenance headache is totally worth it in my opinion. Just accept that rust is part of the coastal lifestyle and enjoy the sound of the waves!
