Looking to buy a studio for my retired parents. Which town is best?

Hey everyone, I'm currently looking into buying a small studio apartment for my parents who are getting ready to retire. They want somewhere peaceful with a mild climate, good healthcare facilities nearby, and easy access to grocery stores without needing a car for everything. My budget is around $200k max. Does anyone have recommendations for towns or suburbs that fit this description, preferably near the coast or in a scenic area? Any advice on specific areas would be really appreciated.

Have you looked into Sequim, Washington? It's in a rain shadow so the weather is much milder than the rest of the PNW, very peaceful, and has a great retiree community.

Sequim is nice, but finding a studio for under $200k there might be pretty tough nowadays, especially near downtown where they wouldn't need a car.

Look at some coastal towns in North Carolina, like Southport or parts of Wilmington. Might be a bit tight on $200k, but totally worth checking out.

I second Wilmington, but definitely stay close to the historic district if they want to walk to places. Otherwise, it's very spread out and car-dependent.

Honestly, at $200k max, coastal areas might be out of reach unless it's a really rundown mobile home. Have they considered inland places near lakes?

That's a very fair point about the budget. Coastal real estate has gotten so expensive over the last few years.

What about somewhere in Florida like Ocala? It's not right on the coast, but close enough to drive, very retirement-friendly, and you can definitely find a nice condo under $200k.

Ocala gets way too hot and humid in the summer for most retirees though. The OP mentioned wanting a mild climate.

Look into the outskirts of Tucson, Arizona. Dry heat, beautiful mountain scenery, and plenty of senior-friendly communities with medical facilities close by.

Tucson is great, but walking to grocery stores in the summer heat is absolute torture. They would definitely need a car for at least half the year.

Coos Bay in Oregon could work. It's on the coast, very scenic, mild climate, and definitely cheaper than California or Washington coastlines.

Coos Bay can be a bit rainy and gloomy in the winter, just a heads up. But healthcare there is surprisingly decent for a smaller town.

Whatever you do, make sure to rent an Airbnb in the area for a couple of weeks during the worst weather month before actually buying anything!
