Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out the most cost-effective internet setup for our summer cottage. We only use the place for about two months total during the summer, but standard contracts require you to pay year-round. Does anyone know of any good providers that offer pause-friendly plans or flexible short-term mobile data solutions without heavy cancellation fees? Would love to hear what others are doing for their seasonal properties.

Have you looked into prepaid 4G/5G mobile routers? That's what we do for our cabin and it works great since you only pay for the data you actually use.

I second the mobile router idea. We bought an unlocked Huawei 4G router and just pop a local data SIM in whenever we arrive.

Most standard fiber providers in my country let you freeze your subscription for up to six months a year for a small nominal fee. Might be worth checking with your current provider.

Really? Which provider does that? Mine told me I had to keep paying the full rate or cancel entirely with a massive penalty.

Starlink is getting popular for this exact scenario because you can pause service anytime through the app, though the upfront hardware cost is pretty steep.

Starlink is overkill for just two months unless you're completely off grid and need heavy streaming.

We just use our phone hotspots. With unlimited data plans nowadays, there's hardly any need for a dedicated home internet setup at a seasonal place.

Hotspotting works fine if you're just browsing, but if you have kids wanting to stream Netflix on rainy days, it burns through data caps fast.

Check out local regional operators. They often have seasonal packages specifically targeted at holiday home owners that major ISPs don't advertise.

I bought a cheap used iPad and use it as a dedicated hotspot for the whole cottage. Never looked back.
